The light glows
In winter we notice how it gets dark early and the nights get longer. Darkness is a symbol for the gloomy world events, the spiritual darkness or the evil.
Shepherds were tending their sheep in the fields near Bethlehem at night when they were suddenly surrounded by a brilliant light: “And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were greatly afraid.” (Lk 2,9).
He spoke of a great joy that should come to them and to all people, "for today is the Savior who gave birth to Christ". The shepherds went there, saw Maria and Joseph, the child wrapped in diapers, praised and praised God, and proclaimed what they had heard and seen.
That is the great joy that the angel proclaimed to the shepherds, the simple marginalized people in the field. These spread the good news everywhere. But the promising story is not over yet.
Later, when Jesus spoke to the people, he said to them: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (Joh 8,12).
In the story of creation, the word of the Bible reveals to you that the Creator separated light from darkness. So it shouldn't surprise you, but it may surprise you that Jesus himself is the light that separates you from darkness. If you follow Jesus and believe his word, you are not walking in spiritual darkness, but have the light of life. In other words, if the light of life dwells in you, you are one with Jesus and Jesus shines through you. Just as the Father is one with Jesus, so are you with Him.
Jesus gives you a clear mission: “You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”Mt 5,14 and 16).
If Jesus lives in you, he shines through you to your fellow human beings. As a bright light, it shines in the darkness of this world and delights everyone who is attracted to the true light.
