James's Wisdom for Our Lives
Jesus, the Son of God, became human to show us how much God wants to be close to us, to share our lives, and how deeply he is willing to change us. Relationships shape us profoundly. The people closest to us influence who we are and what we will become. Imagine the impact of being in intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe. God promises to be close to us as we draw closer to him. This divine relationship is at the heart of our transformation into the image of God we have been called to be since the creation of man. This is the foundation of our Christian life in Jesus Christ.
In everyday life, it is often difficult to live out our faith. Obligations and distractions draw our attention away from God. The Book of James gives us practical advice: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (Jak 4,7-8).
James, Jesus' half-brother and leader of the church in Jerusalem, wrote to Messianic Jews who were experiencing persecution and difficulties. James' letter emphasizes the need to cleanse our hands and sanctify our hearts - a call to submit our whole lives to God. This attitude of humility and devotion creates a practical way of life, which can be summarized in three main teachings that help us put our faith into action.
First, James teaches us to speak with love. Words have tremendous power - they can heal or hurt, build up or tear down, encourage or discourage. Our language reflects the state of our hearts. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are to speak lovingly and truthfully in every situation. By communicating mindfully, we strengthen relationships and are a testimony to God's love.
Second, James emphasizes compassion for the poor and marginalized. He makes it clear that true faith is shown in acts of charity. It is not enough to just speak words of comfort; we should actively act to meet the needs of those in need. By caring for those in need, we show the love of Christ in a practical way.
Third, James calls us to align our lives with Jesus: "Submit yourselves to God." This means submitting our own desires and ideas to the will of God. It requires humility and a willingness to let God lead us. He gives us the strength and wisdom we need to face life's challenges.
As we humble ourselves and draw near to God, we will experience His strength and guidance, which He graciously gives us. Our desire to honor Him is rooted in His deep love for us and His desire for a living, ongoing relationship. By bringing hope, love and peace to all we meet, we reflect the light of Christ in the world and become instruments of His grace.
This relationship changes us from the inside out and enables us to live a life that honors God's name.
