The power of salt

SaltSalt is one of the essential minerals: it regulates the body's water balance, supports digestion, and enables the transmission of impulses in muscle and nerve cells. Jesus illustrated that salt without its flavor is worthless: "Salt is good, but if the salt loses its saltiness, how will you make it salty? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another." (Mk 9,50)In some regions of the world, salt is a rare commodity. A proverb from a Congolese tribe says: "Do not underestimate herbs; they may yet prove useful." If salt is unavailable, special herbs can be used to season food. What should distinguish the disciples of Jesus? "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." (Mt 5,13).

What does that mean in concrete terms? Salt primarily gives flavor to foods that would otherwise lack aroma. Job already asked: "Can bland food be eaten without salt? Or can any flavor be found in egg white?" (Hiob 6,6)The answer is clear: No.

That's why we season egg whites before eating them. This leads to the image: Christians are the salt of the earth. Their task is to give flavor to the world from God's perspective: "Let your speech always be melodious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." (Kol 4,6).

Dear reader, use the grace you have received from God for the benefit of your fellow human beings, so that it may bear rich fruit and give this world the beneficial taste of divine love, visibly, constantly, hopefully and effectively.
