The greatest need of humanity

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... In him was life, and life was light unto men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not accept it.” John 1:1-4 (Zurich Bible)

A certain candidate for political office in the US asked an advertising agency to make a poster for him. The commercial designer asked him which of his qualities he would like to emphasize.

"Just the usual," replied the candidate, "high intelligence, absolute honesty, total sincerity, perfect fidelity, and of course, humility."

With the ubiquitous media of today, we can expect that every politician, however positive he or she may be, will soon be publicly aware of every mistake, misstep, imprecise statement or assessment. All candidates, whether for the parliament or the local community are exposed to the thirst of the media for sensation.

Of course the candidates have the feeling they need to put their image in the best light, otherwise people would not trust them in any way. Despite the differences and despite the personal strengths and weaknesses, all candidates are fragile human beings. Let's be honest, they would love to solve the huge problems of our nation and the world, but they just do not have the power or the resources. They can only do their best to keep things under reasonable control during their term of office.

The problems and infirmities of human society persist. Cruelty, violence, greed, seduction, injustice and other sins show us that there is a darker side to humanity. In reality, this darkness comes from alienation from God who loves us. It is the greatest tragedy that people have to endure and also the cause of all other human ills. In the midst of this darkness, one need grows above all others—the need for Jesus Christ. The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ. She tells us that light has come into the world. "I am the light of the world," says Jesus. "Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12) Jesus Christ restores the relationship with the Father and thus changes humanity from within.

When people put their trust in him, the light starts to shine and everything starts to change. This is the beginning of true life, living in joy and peace in communion with God.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you are light, and there is absolutely no darkness in you. We seek your light in everything we do and ask that your light brighten our lives, so that the darkness gives way back to us as we walk with you in the light. We pray this Jesus name, Amen
