Verily he is the Son of God

641 verily he is the son of godThe older of us will no doubt remember the 1965 monumental film The Greatest Story Ever Told, in which John Wayne played the tiny supporting role of the Roman centurion responsible for guarding Christ on the cross was. Wayne had only one sentence to say, "Verily he was the Son of God," but it is said that during rehearsals, director George Stevens said Wayne's performance was a little too ordinary, so he told him: Not like this - say it with awe. Wayne nodded: What a person! Verily he was the Son of God!
Whether this anecdote is true or not, it gets to the point: Whoever reads or speaks this sentence should do it with awe. The knowledge that the centurion miraculously manifested that Jesus Christ is the Son of God claims the salvation of all of us.
«But Jesus cried out aloud and passed away. And the curtain in the temple tore in two pieces from top to bottom. But the centurion, who stood by, opposite him, and saw that he was thus dying, said: Verily, this man was the Son of God! " (Mark 15,37-39).

You could just say, like so many others, that you believe Jesus was a righteous person, a benefactor, a great teacher, and leave it at that. If Jesus was not God incarnate, his death would have been in vain and we would not have been saved.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that all who believe in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3,16).

In other words, just by believing in him, believing in what Jesus said about himself - he was the only begotten Son of God - we can be saved. Yet Jesus is the Son of God - the One who humbled himself to enter our chaotic world and die a shameful death from a brutal instrument of torture. Especially at this time of year, we remember that his divine love moved him to sacrifice himself in an extraordinary way for the whole world. In doing this, let us remember it with awe.
